San Diego Prescription Contact Lens Information
Prescription contact lenses can correct far sightedness, near sightedness and astigmatism. They are often used by people as an alternative to glasses. Unlike glasses, they provide a full field of vision, which is great for those you participate in sports activities and other activities requiring a full vision field.
Contacts have actually been around for about 100 years. Over the years, advancements have been made that allows just about anyone to wear contact lenses. You may have been told in the past that you couldn’t wear contacts; however, today you may find that you now have that option.
What types of Contacts are Available to you?
There are three types of contacts, which are classified by the material from which they are made. These include:
- Hard lenses, which are constructed of a rigid plastic. This material does not transmit oxygen and have generally been replaced by GP lenses.
- GP lenses, which are known as oxygen permeable contacts and are constructed from rigid, waterless plastic. These types of lenses are considered a good choice for correcting high astigmatism and presbyopia.
- Soft lenses, which are made from hydrogels and cover the entire cornea. An advanced type of soft lenses called silicone hydrogel contact lenses transmits a higher amount of oxygen to the eyes and are the primary type of contact prescribed currently.
Until 1979, contact lenses had to be removed and cleaned every night. Extended wear contacts were introduced that allowed wears to actually sleep with their contacts in place. However, contacts will still need to be replaced frequently due to the buildup of deposits on the lens. By replacing your contacts regularly, you will reduce the possibility of contamination that can result in eye infections.
