Experienced optometrist Dr. Emily Tam joined Encinitas Vision in August 2021, and has been enthusiastically received by patients who appreciate her clinical thoroughness and approachable communication style. (She can converse with patients in English, Spanish, and Mandarin.)
Upon relocating back to Southern California, Dr. Tam was happy to return home to provide full-scope family eye care to the Encinitas community, including diagnosis and management of ocular disease, contact lens care, and urgent eye care services.
Dr. Tam firmly believes fostering trusted doctor-patient relationships and taking time to properly educate patients are essential to providing excellent vision care. “My goal is that each of my patients will experience the most clear, comfortable vision possible and have a good understanding of all aspects of their eye care,” says Dr. Tam. “Vision is such a huge part of daily life, and I love that I can help someone improve their quality of life by helping them see more clearly and with less effort.”
Dr. Tam completed her residency in primary care optometry at Veteran Affairs, San Diego Healthcare System after graduating cum laude from Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University, where she was also a member of the Optometric Honors Society. Prior to earning her doctorate in optometry, she received her bachelor of science in human biology from the University of California, San Diego.
She says she was attracted to the optometry profession because of her fascination with the amount of information the eyes provide. “The eyes are a snapshot of how the whole body is doing,” says Dr. Tam. “One of the reasons I chose to join Encinitas Vision was because it has the technology that allows me to assess the health of ocular blood vessels and the optic nerve so I can care for my patients with an understanding of their overall well-being.”
Her dedication to patient care has extended to her volunteer mission work, where she has traveled several times to Mexico and Tanzania to provide quality eye care to underserved communities.
When Dr. Tam is not caring for patients at Encinitas Vision, she enjoys hiking, snowboarding, beach time, singing as part of her church’s worship team, and exploring food locales with her husband. Indoor pursuits include baking, knitting, crocheting, and spending time with their two dogs and cat (who acts like a dog).
